Patrick Farrand has been working to improve his painting skills for most of his life, developing a diverse body of work ranging from landscapes to portraits to abstract surreal pieces that he can showcase. The 37-year-old artist also has a constant flow of commissioned pieces he's working on.

Farrand always had a keen interest in art in his youth and kept art as a hobby while pursuing other interests. He eventually worked as an animator of both the traditional format and on the computer. In the end, the unfavorable experience he had in the animation field just fueled his desire to focus on fine art as a career. Farrand has a diverse range of art topics, with painting and drawing live models as one of his main passions. He also works on several pieces at a time in order to help keep his creativity going. Farrand estimates he works between 30 and 40 hours a week on his art.

To bring in a regular check, he works part-time at Portfolio Coffeehouse. This is where he met 25-year-old Sonia Hanson, a ceramics artist who, earlier this month, he married. She helps to make his beach-zone home a "house of creativity," he said. Aside from the painting, Farrand said he needs to continue to market his work. "I wish to do more advertising," he said, but that it’s difficult to find the time and money needed to fully market his work. “There is the constant battle between love of art and financial needs."

"I'm doing what I love," he said.
